The Art of Hibernating (Without Losing Momentum in Your Business)
As the nights draw in and the air turns cooler, many of the women I speak to are feeling it – that deep, familiar pull to slow down, withdraw, and rest.
Maybe you’ve noticed it too. The motivation that flowed more easily earlier in the year feels a little harder to find. You’re craving quiet mornings, fewer commitments, and time to just be.
If this is you, please know this: there’s nothing wrong with you. You’re not lazy or unproductive. You’re in tune with the seasons – and with yourself.
We live in a world that glorifies endless momentum, but nature reminds us that rest is not a luxury, it’s a rhythm. Just as winter calls the trees to shed their leaves and conserve energy, we’re invited to do the same – to pause, replenish, and prepare for the growth that will come again.
Slowing down doesn’t mean stopping
What I’ve learned, and what I often share with my community, is that we can honour this natural need for hibernation and keep our businesses running smoothly.
This is where a life-friendly approach really comes into its own. It’s about creating a business that supports you through all seasons – one that can flex and flow with your energy levels, rather than demanding you keep sprinting when you need to walk.
Here are some gentle ways to do just that:
- Simplify what’s essential. Look at what truly needs your attention right now, and what can wait. Often, less really is more.
- Use your systems wisely. Scheduling tools, automated workflows, and clear processes can give you breathing space while your business ticks along in the background.
- Manage expectations with care. Communicate your boundaries and availability with clients – a short, kind message or a thoughtful out-of-office reply can go a long way.
- Plan your time intentionally. Keep your calendar lighter, and block out pockets of rest just as you would any other meeting.
- Repurpose your visibility. This isn’t the time for starting from scratch. Revisit your favourite posts or podcast episodes, and give them new life – or ask AI to help refresh them for you.
Your energy is your greatest asset
During these quieter months, it’s easy to slip into guilt – to tell ourselves we should be doing more. But the truth is, your creativity and clarity thrive when you give yourself space to breathe.
You might find your best ideas appear in those slower moments, when you’re walking by the sea, curled up with a blanket, or simply letting your mind rest. This is when the snow globe settles, and everything becomes clearer again.
Permission to pause
So if you’re feeling the urge to hibernate, listen to it. Take the time to review what’s working, tidy the loose ends, and make things easier for your future self.
You can nurture both your business and your wellbeing. You can give yourself permission to rest, trusting that when spring comes, you’ll be ready to step forward with renewed energy.
And if you’d like a little guidance on how to make that happen – from practical tips for simplifying your systems to examples of how to manage clients and stay visible while you rest – I’ve created something for you.
